Glossary of Terms used
Alignment: a straight line connecting a monument to features in the landscape or another monument
Bronze Age: a subdivision of prehistory, ca 2000- 500 BC in Ireland
Cashel: a form of ringfort constructed of drystone walls (Irish)
Crannog: an artificial island in a lake or wetland, constructed mainly of wood and bound by palisades (Irish)
Hillfort: a hill top fortification
Megalith: large stone (Greek)
Megalithic tomb: a chambered tomb employing large rocks
Mesolithic: the Middle Stone Age, ca 8000- 4000 BC in Ireland
Neolithic: the New Stone Age, ca 4000- 2000 BC in Ireland
Ringfort: a circular enclosure surrounded by one or more earthen banks and ditches; also called rath
Stone alignment: standing stones connected through a straight line
